The Pilar Legend: Hemingway's Familiar Boat

August 19, 20241 min read
The Pilar sailing today isn't Hemingway's original — that boat sits on dry display at the Museo Ernest Hemingway outside Havana — but a faithful replica, donated to Shake-A-Leg Miami by actor Andy Garcia and healthcare executive Miguel "Mike" Fernandez. She's set to become the flagship of Shake-A-Leg's veterans fishing program, giving disabled veterans and their families the same waters Hemingway fished, in a boat rebuilt from the keel up for wheelchair access. It fits naturally alongside Shake-A-Leg Miami's existing adaptive sailing and paddling programs — another way the organization gets people who use wheelchairs out on the water, this time wrapped in a piece of literary history.
